“I choose to make the rest of my life the best of life.”
I love this quote by Louise Hay and as I pondered it, I thought about how choice comes into card reading. There is a misconception about cards as fortune telling, and if someone is telling my fortune, isn’t that what is going to happen anyway?
The short answer is, in a word - NO.
One of the great gifts we have as human beings is the gift of “Choice”. The act of deciding between two or more options. Alternatives. Possibilities. There is always a choice. Even not choosing is a choice. Allowing life to happen to you is a choice.
Card reading is not fortune telling. It is not meant to be something that you do to tell you what to do with every little thing. I’ve seen social media posts of people wanting a reading to decide whether they ought to buy a blue car or a red car, whether they should get a haircut. I know that seems ridiculous, but it happens. These are people fearful of making a wrong choice. (Another quote I like is that there are no wrong choices just opportunities to learn. Or insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting to get different results. You get the picture.).
That is ceding your choice to something else which then allows you to blame the cards when “they are wrong”. It is a way of removing you from making a choice for your life. It gives away your power. I won’t read for questions like that. I don’t even pull daily cards for myself for things like that.
The way I read them, I like to present what the card means and then ask how that resonates with the client. I always show them the card to see what pops up for them in the imagery. Cards are very symbolic, and I might convey the symbolism of what they see but then ask how that fits them. A session with me is meant to be thought-provoking, an opportunity to have something raised that can confirm what you already know or bring a different perspective into your thoughts.
Most readings will begin with the past, but it’s not your life story. It might be something that you’ve been stuck on, or a lesson you’ve learned, or a blessing in your life. It might be an attitude or something/someone you haven’t let go. When I do birthday readings, I look at lessons from the past year and blessings from the past year. It gives a foundation for moving forward.
The real key in readings is the moving forward. Often, a client comes to a reading because she has a choice ahead of her and is contemplating what she should do. She might be unhappy in her job and wonders if she should stick it out or move on. The moving on is scary. In this case, we might talk about the internal blocks that cause it to be fearful, the obstacles that might be present to be able to move on. What the cards do is present some information for the client to think on, to ponder, and it is especially gratifying when there is an “aha” moment.
When we look at the future, it is always “this is what could happen given the energy of today”. This gives the client the chance to determine whether that is an outcome she wants and if so, begin to think about what she would need to do to attain it. If it isn’t, then the question is what do you need to do differently because we know you will always get the same result from what you always have do. Really, if it is raining and you don’t use an umbrella, you will always get wet.
I like the psychology of the cards. I did a reading with a woman whose question was related to opportunities that were coming her way and how she should go about deciding which ones to pursue. It was a 5-card reading with the message to imagine the life she wants for her and her family and step back to examine the opportunities with the eye of which would bring her closer to the life she imagines. There was no pressure to have to do this right then and she was encouraged to take her time to move towards her vision. She was also cautioned that too many choices can bring about chaos and deliberate and careful assessment will help clarify things for her journey. That’s what I mean about the psychology of the cards – looking at human behaviors and presenting options. All of this was solid advice that I certainly would have followed. But, only she could choose for herself.
Ultimately, the reading brings about choice for you. The key is being open and curious, to be willing to hear and be willing to make choices for your highest good. The Universal Spirit wants you to have your best life. It’s not just given to us. We were given the free will to make choices that hopefully bring us to our best life. What I do in a card reading is to help you think differently, to look introspectively, and be reflective. That is when we can make change and one constant in life is change. Will you manage it or let it control you? That’s your choice.
